[90] Earth Observatory

Context as Material, How to Read the Space

The Earth Observatory is a restroom renovation project along I-80 that challenges negative views of public restrooms as "dark, dirty, and unsafe." It combines functional rest-stop needs with scenic beauty inspired by muddy land and salty water interaction. An element filter installation creates an immersive, playground-like experience, encouraging reflection on our treatment of the land. The design's shifting elements and carefully arranged routes foster a deeper connection to nature, transforming stereotypes of functional spaces.
